DNS-Security

The Domain Name System (DNS) filtering delivers protection from online threats like viruses, worms, ransomware, phishing attacks, botnets and any other malware. It entitles the users to recognize and remember names while the computer interprets the names into IP addresses that are machine readable to communicate the data from websites, file servers and email servers to the corresponding email client or the web browser.

How DNS Filtering Work?

With DNS filtering in place, the request will be associated with specific controls. In case, if a specific IP address or webpage is known to be malicious, the access request is blocked to the website. Instead of establishing a connection between the user and the webpage, the user is re-directed to a local IP address which shows a block page with a description that the site is restricted to access.

This control is deployed in router level either through third party or through a web filtering service provider. If it’s done through a web filtering service provider, the user would point the DNS to the corresponding service provider. The service provider archives a blacklist of malicious webpages and IP addresses. If the website is found to be malicious, access to infected websites is terminated.

The DNS filter can also be implemented to terminate access to specific webpage categories – pornography, file sharing websites, gambling, gaming sites and such.

Does DNS Filtering matter?

The protocol of DNS is critical to any web platform, as it serves as the internet phone book and as and when a user visits the website – the system functions a DNS lookup. Webpages that are complex demands multiple DNS lookups even it begins to load and so your system may conduct hundreds pf lookups a day.
